Alpine living is synonymous with both excitement and leisure. Gastronomy is a huge component of the aforementioned leisure aspect of this way of life and is characterised by top-class restaurants that can satisfy the gourmand in all of us. This notion holds true especially in St. Mortiz, Switzerland, the epicenter of the luxury alpine lifestyle and a destination for mountain snowbirds the world over. Here are Insignia’s top 5 picks by category:

Best Traditional Cuisine: Restaurant Talvo by Dalsass

Martin Dalsass doesn’t think much of modern frills with regards to cuisine. He prefers to concentrate on taste, vibrancy and aroma when it comes to his classic Mediterranean fare, starting with the chef’s homemade salami that you will be offered with your aperitif. His fine cuisine merits an equally fine setting, which is provided by the warm and cosy, wood-panelled interior of this old 1658 farmhouse.

Via Gunels 15, St. Moritz – Champfer

Best for Rustic Dining: Bumanns Chesa Pirani*

Located in a traditional Alpine chalet tended to by a couple of husband-and-wife restaurateurs that actually live above the first-floor restaurant, Bumanns Chesa Pirani is an acclaimed St. Moritz dining institution. It is situated within a series of interconnecting parlour rooms lined in knotty wood panelling and matching wood coffer ceilings. Service is purely white-glove for the acclaimed menu served only during the winter high season and then closed for the rest of the year.

Via Chantunela 15, La Punt – St. Moritz

Best Restaurant for Romance: Ecco, St Moritz**

Located a short drive from St. Moritz is Giardino Mountain, a luxury design hotel featuring a restaurant with a Michelin-starred gastronomic pedigree (two to be exact, since 2011). The Alpine façade juxtaposes a far-more modern interior with a fireplace crackling in the centre of a stylish lounge of oversized sofas and club chairs. While the hotel itself is home to three eateries and two bars, the focal point is Ecco, St. Moritz, nestled within a serene space of gold-leaf walls and hand-blown crystal chandeliers.

Via Maistra 3, Champfèr-St. Moritz

Best Après Ski Destination: Chesa Veglia

Since 1936 Chesa Veglia, located in the legendary Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, has been a landmark for foodies and VIPs alike. In the eight decades that have since lapsed, the rustic atmosphere attracts both locals and tourists maintaining its popularity to this very day. Featuring three restaurants and two bars, Chesa Veglia is the hottest après ski venue for mulled wine, bubbles and delicious treats.

Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, Via Serlas 27, 7500 St. Moritz

Best Restaurant for Fine Dining: Restaurant Cà d’Oro

The Michelin starred gourmet restaurant Cà d’Oro is second-to-none in the region for its unforgettable Mediterranean cuisine. Offering a combination of traditional and well-loved dishes with more modern elements, there is something to suit every taste. Located at the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains.

Via Mezdi 27, 7500 St. Moritz, Switzerland
