Spotlights, Reviews, News and Features

As we adjust to the new normal, the one thing that can keep us inspired and excited for travel in the upcoming year is the opening of new boutique hotels and resorts. From secluded and nature-centric spa resorts to big city boutique and art deco hotels, below you will find a selection of the most awe-inducing hotels opening shortly. So, pack your bags, and get ready to discover the world all over again.

Camp Sarika by Amangiri, Utah, USA

Amangiri’s newest location is found in the beautiful 180-million-year-old south Utah desert; despite already being known since 2009 for their heart-stopping otherworldliness and incredible escapes, Camp Sarika tops your wildest fantasies once again. This is a luxury tented retreat to enjoy an exclusive “in-the-wild” experience. To satisfy the current needs of wanting to be secluded, Amangiri has provided us with this exclusive and private location. The ten modern, simple, and sleek tented pavilions sit just a 5-minute drive from the main hotel Amangiri, each with their own heated plunge pool and fire pit. In this 55-hectare space, you will find two spa venues, a restaurant, and a beautiful swimming pool. Many activities are available for you there; you can go kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, or boating on Lake Powell, then enjoy native American ingredients and traditions in their restaurants and spas. Prepare to experience something like never before, remarkably rare, exclusive, and remote.

Ace Hotel Kyoto, Japan

If you find yourself visiting Kyoto, make sure to check out this new opening. Ace Hotel Kyoto brings together the creative forces of Japanese starchitect Kengo Kuma and LA design studio Commune to create a mix of tradition and more contemporary aesthetic style. With a fusion cuisine theme for the in-house restaurants as well, staying at Ace Hotel is a feast for all senses if you’re looking to try something new. This hotel is considered a monument for the country’s abundance of art, traditions, nature, culture, and craft. The colourful and contemporary surroundings will surely be an unforgettable part of your Kyoto adventure.

Arctic Bath, Swedish Lapland, Sweden

One good thing that happened this 2020 was the opening of Arctic Bath, a low-impact spa hotel designed by Bertil Harström and Johan Kaupp. This funky shaped wellness centre floats during summer and freezes into the ice during winter, making it a sight to see all year round! The hotel is centred around a giant ice bath and surrounded by warm saunas and treatment rooms for a unique architectural experience. With only 12 cabins available, you can ensure privacy and seclusion in this curious yet alluring location.

Soho Roc House, Mykonos, Greece

It comes to no surprise that everyone’s favourite Greek island, Mykonos, should be on your summer hit list. It’s good news then that this vibrant location has recently become home to luxury members’-club Soho Roc House, in partnership with the famous beach club Scorpios. With options for lush garden views or sights over the Aegean Sea, a rustic restaurant serving organic Mediterranean food, an outdoor gym and spa treatments, plus a laid-back poolside bar, it’s a no brainer. Make sure to stop at Soho Roc House on your next Greek escape!

Six Senses Shaharut, Israel

The Six Senses Resorts are always a treat to look forward to, with their focus on wellness and sleekness that blend seamlessly into their surroundings. This year, the highly-anticipated Six Senses Shaharut will open in a remote spot south of the Negev Desert in Arava Valley. There, you can expect to be immersed into your surroundings as the design uses local stone and earthy colour palettes, integrating the property into the desert terrain. At this hotel, you will be able to enjoy a selection of 60 suites and pool villas, an expansive Six Senses Spa, yoga studio, nail salon, and indoor and outdoor pools. Dine at the Israeli-Mediterranean restaurant, or, if you want something a little more adventurous, try the tented Bedouin-style dining spot. Unforgettable desert experiences such as dune trekking, jeep safaris, or camping under the stars are the activities waiting for you at Six Senses Shaharut.

One&only Portonovi, Montenegro

You can count on One&Only Resorts to take you to the most beautiful yet underrated locations; this year, the focus is on the group’s first-ever European location, Boka Bay in Montenegro on the western coast of the Balkans. One&Only Portonovi will focus on being a wellness retreat and spa resort for its clients, with 140 rooms, villas, and residences neighbouring its yacht marina. Not only is this coastline location stunningly picturesque, but its nearby riviera escape of Tivat and the medieval town of Kotor will offer plenty to explore. Care to take a dip? Portonovi’s pool stretches into the Adriatic coastline, giving you a full sensory experience. To make matters even better, after this year’s opening, we can expect to be just as blown away with 2021’s opening of One&Only Kea Island resort in Greece!

Cheval Blanc Paris, France

In a coveted location beside the Louvre, Cheval Blanc will be opening their 36-room and 36-suite hotel next years, in its famous Art Deco style. Apart from the jaw-dropping floor to ceiling windows that boast spectacular views of the Sein stretching from the Eiffel Tower to the Notre-Dame cathedral, the hotel will also feature a spa, swimming pool, and restaurant by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Donckele. Their rooftop garden will undoubtedly be Paris’s new favourite hangout. Prepare to experience the city of light in a completely different perspective.
