Witness the grandeur of Milan’s world-famous La Scala opera house on December 7th for the opening night of Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo. The theatre, officially known as Teatro alla Scala, opened in 1778 with Antonio Salieri’s Europa Riconosciuta as its premiere performance.
Over the past two centuries, La Scala has played host to Italy’s most exceptional opera artists and some of the world’s finest singers, solidifying its status as one of the globe’s premier opera and ballet venues.
Returning to a masterpiece from Verdi’s later years, Riccardo Chailly, after exploring Verdi’s early creative journey with season openings dedicated to Giovanna d’Arco, Attila, and Macbeth, presents Don Carlo.
Schiller’s exceptional political drama, initially composed for Paris, was adapted for La Scala by Verdi and has consistently been a highlight for the theatre’s Maestri, from Tullio Serafin and Arturo Toscanini to Claudio Abbado, who conducted it twice for the Scala openings on December 7th in 1968 and 1977, as well as Riccardo Muti.
The new production at La Scala welcomes back Lluís Pasqual, a conductor who has consistently incorporated reflections on the Baroque into his work, from his time at the Teatre Llure of Barcelona to his years with Strehler at the Piccolo and the Odéon in Paris.
