1.Amilla Fushu 

Young, hippy, with a more flexible approach to tropical island luxury, Amilla cuts a distinctly fashionable figure. Go for the high design, terrific dining, super spa treatments and mesmerising marine life. As well as overwater and beach villas, Amilla Fushi has introduced a third accommodation option – swish treehouses. All have large private pools, hammock and barbecue. Family villas have been designed to ensure that both the parent’s and children’s bedrooms are in the same building. 2. Сheval Blanc Randheli 

Cheval Blanc Randheli is an exceptional haven in the pristine Noonu Atoll. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, the 45 villas, some over water, others lining the beach, brim with bespoke, creative details under thatched roofs. Each features a sleek swimming pool, hammock, loungers and a huge daybed. A dedicated majordomo (butler), will look after you and plan your day, from unpacking your suitcase and ironing clothes to booking restaurants, diving expeditions or fine-tuning a bubble bath filled with frangipani flowers. 3. Niyama 

Proclaiming itself “Nature’s playground”, Niyama Private Islands Maldives takes barefoot luxury to an exotic new level. Its two islands Chill and Play, one with a family focus and the other dedicated to couples, are a tropical paradise with lush vegetation, ivory white beaches, crystal clear waters and endless views of the Indian Ocean. Choose between beach or “over-water” living. Food-wise, whether you’d like Afro Latin grilled fare in a campsite atmosphere, or a more refined menu on a floating restaurant reached only by boat, every night can see you trying something new. Subsix is the underwater bar and music lounge offering culinary delights and champagne breakfasts. 4. Shangri-La’s Villingili 

Tucked away on a castaway isle in the Maldives’ most southerly atoll, this spacious high-end haven is the largest single-resort island in the archipelago and operates in its own time zone – so that guests can enjoy an extra hour of sunshine for the ultimate disconnect. Its over-water accommodations and villas nestled secretively in the jungle, are exceptionally spacious, with enormous bathrooms, open-air showers, walk-in wardrobes and vast, comfortable beds. 5. Six Senses Laamu

Every villa at Six Senses Laamu is assigned a ‘guest experience maker’. The Water Villas are spectacular, boasting glass floor and glass outdoor tables enabling you to observe the underwater world while relaxing or dining. If you are travelling as a family, the spacious Lagoon Beach Villa offer two bedrooms with private pool and direct access to the lagoon. It is possible to take a picnic lunch on a nearby deserted island which you’ll have all to yourself for several hours too. The Chill Bar is the best spot to take in the mesmerising sunsets, Leaf offers fine dining and Longitude is an excellent spot for catching a glimpse of dolphins – whilst eating breakfast. Many of the mouthwatering dishes are created from produce grown in the island’s organic gardens. The resort is hidden deep in the Indian Ocean towards the far southern reaches of the Maldivian archipelago. The location does mean it takes a little longer to get there but trust us – it is worth the journey.
